What I Have Been Listening To (catch up)
Here I will write about 2 albums I should have written about last year. More to come in follow up posts.
Thelma Plum - Meanjin EP (2022)
An innocent but extremely clever EP from the Australian artist Thelma Plum. The lyrics of this work on a whole are deeper than the simple melody suggests. The themes are innocent and simple. This keeps things accessible but all the while still meaty. There are multiple genres that creep into this short work. Folk, electronic, pop and indie, all melt together to make a really lovely combination. It stays around enough to keep you wanting more. Top tracks::
The Brown Snake
The love of Meanjin, is utterly clear in this track. So many nostalgic memories push through the lyrics and simple vocal melodies of this tune. Wonderful.
When It Rains It Pours
A lovely little acoustic guitar pop number with crisp guitars and synths to fill I the gaps. What a joyous and melancholic tune. The Australian production style stands out on this one, more than it should.
Toro Y Moi - Mahal (2022)
An electronic smorgasbord that fills the mind and ears with wonder. The production of this work is outrageously good. There are little changes to the formula, such as scratches and pops that break the mould of the electronic elements. The vocals are simple but heavily effected to sit on top of the mix. There is a nice space and distance left in this work that keeps things chill and quiet. The features are a nice touch.
Magazine (feat. Salami Rose Joe Louis)
The clean drums, the chorus laden guitars and the wavey synths all combine to make a piece that will stay with you.
Clarity (feat. Sofie Royer)
This guitar and synth effect odyssey will push you through any bad vibes you might be on. Strange flute parts keep your interest more than it should.
Days In Love
The vocal layers are great! The spacey production fills a background aesthetic that is a mixture of Kurt Vile and Queen.
