Sonic Experiment #328
Sonic Experiment #328 is the latest in my Live Takes series. The work is an extended generative synth-noise piece. The heart of the work is the generative chance algorithms present as FX in the Squarp Pyramid sequencer. I have many synthesizer layers that combine in a sequence. Layers come in and out and each has chance filters generated and rest on every note to determine if, and what will play. Elements controlled include, note duration, pitch, velocity and chance to occur. Each are set at different percentage ranges away from their initial point. For pitch, all synths are set to the same scale. The layers are introduced slowly over time, thickening the overall texture. Reverb and character was brought to the timbres from the SoundCraft Signature MK 22 analogue mixing desk. The following other synths were used:
Arturia DrumBrute - for kick and hi-hat
Arturia MiniBrute - for deep bass swells
Korg Wavestate - for chords
Korg Minilogue XD - for multiple higher pitched lines
Make Noise 0-Coast - for plucky synth sounds
Koma Elektronik Field Kit - for high pitched radio cycling textures
The work is long form by design to let each layer fully be explored. The nature of the generative timbres are set to 16 and 32 bar repeating patterns of 4 bar loops. There is a feeling of unease that comes from a few places. The Dm Harmonic scale brings an ominous feel; the sparkly radio wave textures are reminiscent of background tinitus; the wonky pitch of the 0-Coast keeps the piece non-perfect by design.
I feel a sense of accomplishment with this for getting back into the studio and completing a long form drone project that rekindles my love of generative synthesis.
