Roll For Priest - Indie TTRPG v0.1

I am in the middle of writing a large scale TTRPG project. In the mean time, I love to write smaller projects in between larger ones, to get my creative juices flowing. The following is one that I wrote in one day for a bit of fun.

Note: This game is not for kids or those of the faint hearted; there are inappropriate themes. It is also playtest content, I want your feedback on this!

Roll For Priest

Character Sheet

Rules

A tabletop roleplaying game about priests going on adventures, spruking your god and its drive. Helping the poor and generally getting up to nonsense in a dark world. You believe you are on the right path and helping others (unless you straight up don’t) but your blind devotion isn’t always a good thing. Being so holy leaves room for a generally obvious flaw, you are only human after all, for now.

Build

Roll on the tables below to build your Priest and God. Pick or roll for each column. You can also make up your own with consultation from your game master.

You decide:

  • Your holy symbol detail

  • Detail for deity icon

  • 3 items that make sense that you would have + clothing and 1 holy symbol

You have 3 skills:

  • Priest 2d6 - any theology, your god’s domain and magic

  • Stuff you’re good at 3d6 - your build

  • Everything else 1d6 - everything else not on your build

Social and Exploratory Checks

  • To complete a task successfully you must get a total of 6 from your dice rolled.

    • Checks can be reactive and active choices.

    • Checks are only important when failure is interesting, time is an issue or things are dangerous.

  • 1 other person can help you by providing 1 dice if it makes sense.

Other abilities

All other abilities will have complications on failed checks, as determined by your Game Master.

  • You get a series of Prayers you check and have 3 types of abilities that are vague (a conversation between you and GM) - you can only use each one successfully once in an adventure - once successful you no longer have access to it.

  • Call For Help - once per session you may ask for your god’s aid - it succeeds automatically if you make a promise, offering or sacrifice to your god. It’s blessing within the circumstances is up to the Game Master.

  • You may attempt to Turn (force to flee) your chosen god’s “evil” (usually opposite to goal/domain) - once successful per session.

  • You may attempt to Resurrect someone once per session - if successful you will bring them back with a twisted flavour of your god

Combat Checks

  1. Roll for initiative

  2. 2 action as per check above

  3. Roll to hit with spell or weapon if you have that

  4. Roll to see if you’re wounded and killed if you get hit, with a -1 penalty per time hit (reset if resurrected)

Example Alternate Priest

  • Priest of the Tempest God Karnak The Powerful (symbol a longsword in lightning bolts)! You are Cult leader Sherman. Flaw: Way too impulsive but good with a blade. Your holy symbol is an ancient blade.

  • Powers: Death to the infidels, Unnatural lightning, Natural Disaster
