Excel Hex Map
This week I run you through my Hex map for use in tabletop roleplaying games. It is made using Microsoft Excel! Let me know what you think.
The first question that most ask is: why?
Well, in my day to day work, I love to use Excel to solve my data issues, and had an idea to use the advanced features to make a hex map. There is a bond between excel and ttrpg map making that makes it a pretty useful tool. Using hyperlinks to move between the various tabs, you can see different parts of the interface. Merging cells in specific areas, creates the overlap of sides and six-sided clusters.
You will see on the opening page that this is a colour coded typical affair hex map. I have left the icons on the front page up to you to decide! The yellow links on the pages, jump to the main pages. You can create hyperlinks to new tabs, to create click through “sub maps”, like shown in hex 1,1.
The next page of importance is the topographical map. Here a game master can show differing levels of height on their maps.
The next page is a campaign tracker of sorts. This can be used to track battles, path travelled, where there was destruction and even where player characters died!
There is also a map page where you can embed a map image that you would like to use!
This is an example of a dungeon that is linked on 1,1 “Dungeon of The Goat Priest”. The border tools make building dungeons really easy. The relevant icons for a regular dungeon crawl can be found here!
