Through - Graphic Score & Audio-Visual Work
This week I made a graphic composition as a part of my weekly output goal. The work features a grid like pattern and some swirls. I used a very deliberate colour palette and recognisable shapes, to assist in the audio transposition. There are 3 swirls that surround a grid shape. 2 of the swirls are similar in density and colour, and one is thicker and contrasting in colour. Its circular swirl is also not complete, unlike the others. The grid features squiggles that go over 3 lines. The symmetry was deliberate. The different lines are of divisible amounts of the coloured splotches, in the centre of the swirls.
This week’s Live Takes recording was an audio translation of this score. I represented the coloured squiggles in the centre of the work through a drum line. This was deliberate in writing the original score. I used a hi-hat to represent the 16 green shapes, on 16th rhythms. The 4 red shapes are represented with a sweeping cymbal timbre. A sub bass line is used to represent the 8 blue shapes. The drums provide a grounding and central focus. The unevenness of the shapes are heard through a random velocity algorithm added to the work. The yellow swirl is portrayed with a glitching clicking timbre that stops and starts. The 2 different pad sounds are used to perform the purple and maroon swirls. The closeness of the timbres are audio representations of the similar colours and connections. The pads move in and out in a less rhythmic way, then the drums. The volume of the pads and the glitching timbre, are to envelope the drums. The visuals are black circles that appear in and out of a white Fram. They provide something to look at but do not draw interest away from the audio focus.
The work overall, is disoriented and abstract. There is a sense of movement throughout. The pads that weave their way over the drums, keep the work melodic but spooky. Its quick length helps sustain interest. The timbres stop and start without warning or reason.
I was kept on the edge while composing this work. It was fun to do a graphic score and audio visual representation in one sitting.
Enjoy.
